First and foremost, Happy Birthday to our homie Jason Ortiz and happy 2 year to JP and Sindell. I came to meet up with JP and Sindell just before the Knick game. Later on Matt slid through and we rolled to the homie Alvin's pad. There we met up with Riegel and Ramos slides through later on. Celebrating New York's victory over Lakers (Ant Russo, I know you're still mad). A pizza party was thrown. Remember the days before we grew up? Juice + Pizza + Videogames, except we have beer at our disposal. We ended up chillin and playing smash. Unfortunately, Matt Fresco had no victories over anyone. Stay Tuned.

Project: Custom Watch Strap #1

Here is a project I started last night, I wanted to make a watch strap made from good quality leather. A lot of watch straps these days are pretty generic and made out of faux leather, I want to give one of my old watches a watch band that will give it more character. I decided to take one of my old Coach wallet and disassemble it, this is what I have so far. Not the perfect watch strap because it is my first time making one, but you can sense the handmade feel to it. Next step to this project is attaching the buckle and maybe treating the leather for a more vintage look. Stay tuned.

Here's a new spot that has been generating a buzz and spreading out by word of mouth. Juicy Platters is a small little Halal restaurant in New Jersey. If your planning on eating there, make sure it isn't busy because there are 4 sitting area on the front and thats it, this spot is more ideal for pick up. They have good amount of variety in the menu from wings, gyros, platters, and more.

I ordered a mixed platter which is consist of chicken, lamb, rice, pita, lettuce, and the white sauce. My first impression about the food is that the meat is cooked and served with some onions and tomatoes, you can even add other things on it such as falafels and more. Compare to CnR, Juicy Platters definitely taste a lot healthier and cleaner. The only thing that I wasn't sure about was the white sauce, I know for a fact that the sauce isn't the same as CnR, Juicy Platters sauce is a bit more tangier. I'm not saying its bad, but its not the same, it'll come down to if you like the sauce or not and personally I didn't mind it at all! If you're ever get the craving for CnR and you don's want to go on a mission to pay the toll across the bridge and the drive, this spot is definitely a go! Make sure to check em out. We give them a 4/5 rating and the go spot for our halal cravings that is very convenient in the distance, the pocket, and the taste buds!

On Friday, Ant hit me up the other day and proposed an assignment. He was saying that he wanted us to shoot a promo for Pro Keds. You already know how we roll. We try to get everyone involved. The previous night, JP and I had a brainstorming sesh with the proposed idea. The original plan was to meet up with Ant the next day and chop it up with ideas. On a whim, we decided to begin shooting the project. The goons and made a trip to 140th and Lenox to film the promo. We needed the Big L mural in the film. As soon as we arrived, we got to work. Everything fell into place smoothly. Being that it's the first time I've seen the Big L mural, I didn't know what to expect. For anyone that truly loves and appreciates hip hop, visiting this piece is the same as visiting the pyramids if you were an archaeologist. Overall, Harlem showed the three of us mad love. On our way back, we linked up with Matt and hit up downtown JC for falafels and shawarma. We got the rough cut of the video done as well. Stay tuned, we'll be putting out the video shortly!

Simple Living: Champorado

A lot of you are familiar with this, and for those who aren't this is what we call Champorado (chocolate rice). Chocolate rice? Yes, chocolate rice! Many times I've explained this to somebody who doesn't know about it, first reaction is ew, hey lets face it it does sound weird if you never had it before. Don't be so ignorant now, give everything a chance before you judge it. This is perfect if you want to stay in when its snowing, perfect for breakfast but I can literally eat this any time of day. These are the stuff you'll need.

1 1/4 sweet or sticky rice
1/2 cup cocoa powder or 4 rounds of tableya (cocoa)
1/2 cup brown sugar or regular white sugar
1 small can of condensed milk or evaporated milk
3 cups of water

First thing you need to do is mix the water and sugar, then bring both to a boil. After that you want to mix in your sticky rice along with your cocoa powder, mix until the mixture is lump free. Put the mixture into 8-10 min boil maybe more depends on how sticky you want your Champorado to be, make sure you don't cook it dry. When ready to serve, pour some of your condensed milk on top to add a little more taste to your Champorado.

Egg White Wrap

Many people stress how much they want to lose weight as their new years resolutions fold. Ontop of that, not many people know the dangers of skipping breakfast. Breakfast is the first and most important meal of the day. The most common misconception is that skipping breakfast/and or eating less will lead to weight loss. Disregarding the morning meal slows down your metabolism and usually leads to over-eating at lunch time. Your body is like a car. Are you gonna feed it premium gas? or regular?

Ingredients

-2 egg whites

-organic mild cheddar

-2 slices of turkey bacon

-1 whole wheat wrap

-diced green peppers

-onions (I usually have onions, but I forgot to buy some)

-tabasco sauce (for a little kick)

-steak bits (*optional* I had them leftover from yesterday’s dinner)

Here is a restaurant that should've been the very first entry on the GoodEats. We have been going to this place for a while now and I've just put it aside because I wanted post it with some new pictures. Mama Finas is a Filipino restaurant in Elmwood Park, NJ. It is a pretty known spot in the filipino community, the whole menu wouldn't disappoint you but they are known for their Sisig. Although a lot of Filipinos wouldnt consider their Sisig made the traditional way, it is still undoubtedly superb. I would personally say, it's hard to find Sisig around this area that will match up to theirs.

Mama Finas' Sisig 4 different types of meat, the most popular chicken and pork, then for the seafood lovers tuna and squid; also available in spicy or mild. The restaurant is a BYOB (bring your own beer) and Sisig is known to be the best beer food. After our Sisig meal, we ordered Turon; a sweet plantain wrapped in spring roll wrap, glazed with molten brown sugar. We give this place a 5/5, a spot we keep coming back to and a place we highly recommend.

Simple Living: Home Fries

Earlier today I decided to make home fries, past couple of times I tried making them some of the potatoes were still undercooked in the middle even though the outside looked nice and crisp. Today I've finally managed to make the perfect home fries. All I really needed to change was to boil the potatoes for about 3-5 minutes before cutting them up and frying them. Make sure not to boil the potatoes for too long, they will break down when you fry them.

1. Boil the potatoes 3-5 minutes.
2. Cut them up in half inch cubes. (The bigger the cut, the longer they take to cook)
3. Put 2 tablespoon of cooking oil on the pan and let it heat up for 2-3 minutes.
4. Fry the potatoes, flip em after 8 minutes and make sure all sides gets cooked.
5. Add a little bit of salt and pepper. If you want them to taste like diner fries, add a little bit of butter, garlic powder, and onion powder.

So with this post, I must mention first that I've had my best burger from this place. Last weekend we visited Cornell University and our friend Edgar who goes there brought us to this place. At first I was hesitant because when he said burger, I thought it was pretty generic but after eating there it was definitely worth going to.

The place is nice, neon sign inside, dimmed lights, and the overall feel is good. For starters Edgar put us on this "Buffalo Chicken Dip", It was out of the ordinary but a really good out of the ordinary. They have variety of burgers, one of them that caught my attention is the "Surf-N-Turf Burger" which was a burger with a crab cake patty on top (see the picture), I was thinking why nobody ever thought of that around here? For those who want to put their burgers on the test with nothing extra, you can get the "Perfect Burger" which is the most traditional it can get, but served Ithaca Ale House style. We rate this place a 5/5, a spot we'd def go to again when we come up north!

Here's another place that should have been part of this blog a long time ago. Hop Kee is a Chinese restaurant in the NYC Chinatown area, this place have been visited by Anthony Bourdain, Bill Cosby, and a lot of other famous people. This place is a downstairs restaurant, the inside is not the most high end and most cozy but it isn't that bad either. There are a lot of choices to pick from the menu and most of them are pretty much the standard Chinese food that you'd find at your local town, the difference is, this might be a tad bit pricier.

If you are going on a large group, you might as well have people share entree's and just order a bunch of sides. The portions are a little above average, service most of the time is fast and very good. Overall the food is really good no matter what you get, but if you're feeling adventurous and risky, I highly suggest trying the snails w/ cantonese style sauce. The snails are very small, looks intimidating, but it's pretty good. Texture is almost like squid. When you aren't far from the spot and you're hungry, you will find yourself coming back to this place, not to mention they're open til' very late. This place gets a 5/5 from us! Make sure to check them out.

This past weekend we got to introduce ourselves to the general public by vending some of our merchandise at the FIND Inc dialogue, which this time around was located in Cornell University. We had the luxury of staying at a place 5 minutes away from campus while most of the people got hotels 30 - 45 min away. We came in to this event not expecting much, the only thing I wanted to make sure for this weekend was to have fun and enjoy every moment of it. We met a lot of cool people this weekend, shoutouts to Bread and Bullets of DC (Ryan, Chris, and David), Busog Means Full of NY, Nawtee Life of NJ, Aireal Apparel of VA.

The campus was great, and the building where we got to set up was real nice and brand new. We got to check out Ithaca Ale House which by far I would say is the best burger I've had so far (this will be featured in GoodEats). Thanks to everybody in the Worxlife family for all the hand! This trip wouldn't have been possible without them.

This coming weekend (Nov 4 -5, 2011) we will be at Cornell University for the FIND Inc conference. We will be vending and releasing a few unseen pieces. I'm looking at this as Worxlife's first day debut to the public. Though we were established back in 2009, we have kept ourselves underground, not saying there's anything wrong with that, but 2 years into this, I think it's time to try to see how the masses will react. You honestly never know it could go, either good or bad (we are hoping for the good of course).

Since this is going to be our first time vending, we do not have any banners to put on our table. Due to the preparation of our merchandise and other knick nacks we are low on funds and we are going with a more traditional approach to our banner. Back before computer and printing presses existed, every single sign were hand drawn/painted and it takes more than the eye to make an effective sign. The hand has to go along with the eyes, I know this banner is never going to look as crisp or as sharp as a printed banner but this will definitely have more of an organic feel (not to mention the material we are using), and also will have more character compared to a printed banner.

Craftsmanship is a quality that we highly value, and hope that you see some through our work. A regular Joe will look at a sign and say it's just like any sign. But at the end of the day keep this in mind, little signs and posters makes the difference when you look at a hood chicken spot/chipotle/dollar store/target ads/ikea ads/american apparel ads/etc.

Yesterday, Riegel and I finally made the trip to the city, I have a paper due on Tuesday and I needed to go to the Guggenheim Museum for it, part of the requirements for my paper is a picture outside of the museum -__- . Unfortunately we weren't allowed to take pictures inside of the museum. By the time I finished writing my notes and exploring the whole museum, we headed down to chinatown to get some food, and what place is the best to visit? We ended up at Hopkee (will be on GoodEats this week). After a satisfying meal, we decided to head towards OWS. We've been meaning to stop by, but it's better late than never. I highly suggest reading up on whats going on, it was day 44 when we stopped by and it seems like it'll continue on.
